APEC

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) is a forum for 21 Pacific Rim member economies that seeks to promote free trade and economic cooperation throughout the Asia-Pacific region. It was established in 1989 in response to the growing interdependence of Asia-Pacific economies and the advent of regional trade blocs in other parts of the world; to fears that highly industrialized Japan (a member of G8) would come to dominate economic activity in the Asia-Pacific region; and to establish new markets for agricultural products and raw materials beyond Europe (where demand had been declining). APEC works to raise living standards and education levels through sustainable economic growth and to foster a sense of community and an appreciation of shared interests among Asia-Pacific countries. APEC includes newly industrialized economies, although the agenda of free trade was a sensitive issue for the developing NIEs at the time APEC founded, and aims to enable ASEAN economies to explore new export market opportunities for natural resources such as natural gas, as well as to seek regional economic integration(industrial integration) by means of foreign direct investment. Members account for approximately 40% of the world's population, approximately 54% of the world's gross domestic product and about 44% of world trade. For APEC Economic Trends Analysis in 2012, see.

An annual APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting is attended by the heads of government of all APEC members except Taiwan (which is represented by a ministerial-level official under the name Chinese Taipei as economic leader). The location of the meeting rotates annually among the member economies, and a famous tradition, followed for most (but not all) summits, involves the attending leaders dressing in a national costume of the host country.

In finance, a dead cat bounce is a small, brief recovery in the price of a declining stock. Derived from the idea that "even a dead cat will bounce if it falls from a great height", the phrase, which originated on Wall Street, is also popularly applied to any case where a subject experiences a brief resurgence during or following a severe decline.

decision cycle is a sequence of steps used by an entity on a repeated basis to reach and implement decisions.
  • Within the United States military, a theory of an Observe–Orient–Decide–Act (OODA) loop has been advocated by Colonel John Boyd.
  • In quality control, plan–do–check–act is used.
  • In science, the scientific method (hypothesis–experiment–evaluation, or plan–do–check) can also be seen as a decision cycle.
  • In the nursing process, the ADPIE (Assessment–Diagnosis–Planning–Implementation–Evaluation) process is used. This has a suggested revision, in the ASPIRE (Assessment–Systematic Nursing Diagnosis–Planning–Implementation–'Recheck'–Evaluation) model, to include an additional stage—'Recheck'—in between 'Implementation' and 'Evaluation'.

In 2011, the regulator had levied on SBI Life a fine of Rs.70 lakh reserving its rights to take further action on the matter. And in 2012 the regulator ordered the life insurer to distribute Rs 84.31 crore to the members/beneficiaries of the respective group insurance policies.
LIC hikes stake in Tata Power

SBI to carry on in UK despite crackdown on foreign banks

State Bank of India is determined to carry on retail banking operations in the UK despite a recent crackdown by the Bank of England on the operations of foreign-owned banks in the country.

SBI, which has been operating in the UK for 95 years, said it is prepared to set aside 100 million pounds in ring-fenced capital and restructure its operations if that is necessary to keep operating on the high streets.

Mrutyunjay Mahapatra, the UK head of the bank, told 'The Times' newspaper that the bank will keep serving retail customers in Britain as well as open new branches.

"Our intention is to continue to do business in the UK. We have been here for 95 years. We're too deep rooted here," he said.

The Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) of the Bank of England had recently issued an ultimatum to the British operations of foreign-owned banks taking deposits of more than 100 million pounds to restructure with their own ring-fenced capital or end retail operations.

SBI, which has over 900 million pounds of deposits in Britain, is among those affected.

Bank of Baroda, which has 10 branches in Britain, and Bank of India, with seven, could also be hit.

A consultation launched in February by the PRA, responsible for supervising individual banks, concluded in September.

Under the new rules, banks from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) must offer only minimal retail services.

Analysts suggest Isbank of Turkey and Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation of Singapore are also likely to be affected.

They would either have to shut down their retail banking operations in Britain or convert from branch status to full UK subsidiary - an expensive and cumbersome process.

The new rules mean it will be easier for wholesale foreign banks, which cater to other financial institutions and large corporations rather than retail customers, to open non-deposit taking branches which would not face size limits but are likely to make it very difficult for some retail bank branches to operate.

Subsidiaries are subject to more complex clearances and branches, on the other hand, are part of a home office legal entity and do not require their own capital base in the UK or a separate board.

Therefore, mostly foreign banks prefer to operate as branches because subsidiaries are more expensive to run, requiring their own pools of capital and liquidity, as well as their own boards and legal entity, and have the routine extra cost of reporting to "host country" supervisors.

The new proposals are an attempt to strike a balance between welcoming foreign finance and protecting the UK from imported banking crises.

Britain also wants to avoid having to compensate savers with deposits at a failing foreign bank as it had to with Icesave accounts run by a branch of Icelandic bank Lands?banki, which collapsed in 2008 during the global financial crisis.
